Even though vacation is a time for indulgence, one of the most-asked questions is “where can I find healthful choices”? Walt Disney World Resort chefs love the challenge of creating healthful bites that taste as good (or better) than we might imagine.
In no specific order, here are 10 of our favorite spots for eating healthfully at Magic Kingdom Park :
The fresh roasted corn at Liberty Square Market. And it’s a bargain at $3.79, grilled before your eyes all day long. (We’re told they sell more than 700 ears on a busy day.) And when local Zellwood sweet corn is in season, that’s what they grill in the husk. You can add all sorts of seasonings, but it’s best with just a little salt and pepper.
We love walkaround food, and it’s hard to pick a favorite: the fresh pineapple spear at Aloha Isle ; hummus and chips from Gaston’s Tavern ; or an apple or banana from Prince Eric’s Village Market . You’ll also find fresh fruit at kiosks throughout the park.
Columbia Harbor House is a favorite for quick service – a little off the beaten path, and we often find a quiet corner upstairs. Best bets are the Lighthouse Sandwich with hummus, tomato and broccoli slaw on toasted multigrain bread; the broccoli peppercorn salad with greens, veggies, chicken and Parmesan cheese, and, on cool days, the vegetarian chili.
In Tomorrowland, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe has lots of healthful choices, like the veggie burger, veggie sandwich and a hearty Greek salad. For something sweet the no-sugar-added mango gelato hits the spot.
Southwest chicken salad at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe is a filling lunch. Or the veggie burger.
In Fantasyland , Pinocchio Village Haus is a quick stop for the Mediterranean Salad with greens, red onion, black olives, roasted red peppers, mozzarella and chicken. (They also serve the delish no-sugar-added mango gelato.)
For lunch, Liberty Tree Tavern is a table-service favorite. We usually order the Colony Salad with greens, Ocean Spray Craisins, apples, sweet pecans, applewood-smoked Cheddar cheese and grilled chicken web link with a honey-shallot vinaigrette. And the tavern’s vegan burger is pretty good, made with potatoes and quinoa and topped with a vegan tofu-tzatziki sauce. (Seriously, try it.)
The ever-popular Cinderella’s Royal Table serves a healthful fish of the day, or go with the veggie pick: rice with roasted eggplants, mushrooms, onions and squash tossed with arugula pesto and a splash of aged balsamic vinegar.
Plaza Restaurant still serves the Chicken Strawberry Salad, which has been on the menu as long as we can remember, is still just as delicious with greens, cucumbers, strawberries and grilled chicken tossed with a white zinfandel vinaigrette.
Last, but not least, Be Our Guest Restaurant has some light bites for lunch, like the tuna Niçoise salad with warm seared tuna, or quinoa salad. For dinner, go vegan with the layered ratatouille: baked zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, tomatoes and caramelized onions layered on quinoa with a bell pepper sauce. Again, splurge with a happy ending: the no-sugar-added option for dessert, a lemon-raspberry cream puff.

Our team at Planet Ford is so happy that we were able to help make this wonderful wish a reality, said Kramer, general manager/operating partner. Everyone worked hard, including the students, and it paid off. They had a blast and will have life-long memories that they will forever cherish. Typically, these students, who have intellectual or developmental disabilities, are unable to go on school trips without their parents due to their special needs. Not only did all of the children, chaperones and family members receive hotel, airfare and tickets to the parks; Reed provided each child with mementos, from custom keepsakes and T-shirts to autograph books. This trip was the result of the Reeds memorable and moving visits to the Best Buddies program in Humble, Texas. These families rarely, if ever, have the time or resources to take a vacation together, much less to a place as magical as Disney, Sherry Reed said. It really is all about the magic, said Randall Reed. We are thankful to be part of the journey, but there are no more roller coaster rides are in my future, he joked. Fifteen was enough! About Best Buddies: KPHS Best Buddies is part of a nonprofit 501(c)(3) global organization of volunteers and students dedicated to creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships between students with learning differences and disabilities and their student peers.

Participating hotels include these Value, Moderate, and Deluxe hotels, as well as Disney Vacation Club properties: Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower Villas Pop Century Resort Port Orleans Resort French Quarter and Riverside To participate in the Direct to Room check in, visitors must first complete a number of steps to set up their online Disney profile, including creating a My Disney Experience account, linking their hotel reservation and ordering MagicBands. Prior to arrival, participants must use Disney’s online resort check-in system and pay for any outstanding balance due on their reservation. In addition, participants have up to one hour before their anticipated arrival time to leave a credit card on file in the check-in process to cover any room charges. Once participants complete this check-in process, they just wait for an e-mail and/or text message (depending on the notification preferences set up during check-in) that notifies them that their room is ready, and provides the room number. The MagicBand device sites acts as the room key, so there is no need to go to the hotel lobby before heading to the room. If participants opt to receive an e-mail notification, the message includes a copy of the resort map marked with room number maps. Those who opt only for text message notifications receive a message that says simply, “Your room number XXXX is ready,” and invites them to go directly to their room. I’ve been told that a future upgrade of the system will allow Disney cast members monitoring the notification system to send a resort map to a guest on request, which will likely prove handy for guests who opt only for text alerts and cannot find their room based on number alone. Although this new system saves a bit time at the very start of the trip, there are still reasons you may want to visit the front desk even if you are eligible for Direct to Room check-in. For example, guests who need to park a personal or rental car must go to the front desk to obtain a parking permit, and people travelling together who want to use separate credit cards for their individual room charges need to visit the front desk to set that up, as the online check-in system cannot handle multiple forms of payment.
